Eric Schierloh

FICTION | 2019 | 160 pages

A sort of apocryphal biography of Melville; an odd artifact composed of diverse materials that centers on the years Melville disappeared from public life.

Who is M? And what did he do during the long period he spent in hiding? Eric Schierloh has composed a fascinating account based on letters, memories, highlighted and annotated books, photographs, newspaper articles, all the materials that are frequently neglected, like wild roses forgotten by the hands of man.

"After this, I woke up and despised popularity," wrote Melville. And also, "multitudes mean security for a persecuted man, as they are the real desert. And in the crowds of the capital, he would go on to disappear for over forty years, like someone who penetrates the thickness of the night."

RIGHTS: spanish ETERNA CADENCIA

M (Eterna Cadencia, 2019) is an almost oulipian work (at times pure Perec) that displays strong ‘negative creation,’ what we could call ‘obscured creation through suppression,’ a movement through which, even when knowing less, we end up learning much more about M than we’d been able to learn from the rest of his biographers. And in the end, it’s as though the only thing capable of reaching the real truth is fiction applied to the history of a life.
