Miembro fantasma

SHORT STORIES | 2026 | 148 pages

A phantom limb is an amputation that persists as pain and as a presence. Is it an imaginary pain? No; it’s real. The characters in these stories carry their losses with them. Pain that becomes ingrained, throbbing silently in the most intimate sphere—pain that remains lodged in the memory of families, lovers, and friends; that is inscribed in the history of a wounded nation. In this universe, addictions, escapes, and emotional detachment serve as anesthesia for what cannot be endured or erased: because some ghosts are invisible, but still they wander within us.

The stories in Miembro fantasma are admirable, not only for their narrative language, which is both virtuosic and powerful, but also for in the way they were conceived and how they open up to a vast range of mental and physical mutilations related to historical wounds, with additions such as alcoholism or emotional voids (...) Ultimately, a double protagonist lurks inside every plot: memory and oblivion, which together make these stories unforgettable.
— Francisco Recio, La Opinión de Málaga
Miembro fantasma explores the way the things we lose continue shaping our lives with precision...in these powerful stories, Trías demonstrates the extent to which the short story continues to be one of literature’s most demanding forms.
— Eva Cosculluela, ABC Cultural
None of the stories in this new collection by the Uruguayan writer resorts to predictable structures, and it is precisely there that the virtues of these stories, which are always striving to do something different, lie.
— Aloma Rodríguez, El Mundo
These stories unfold in an atmosphere of terrifying beauty.
— Diego Gándara, La Razón
