La mujer incierta
Piedad Bonnett
NONFICTION | 2024 | 234 pages
“The one who has allowed my presence on the page is above all the uncertain woman, a woman that still exists within me, under all my layers. But there are others, some of which are not shown here, or never will be.”
How do we tell our own story? And, through that exercise, to what extent is our identity constructed or reconstructed? In this autobiographical book, Piedad Bonnett shares her experiences to reflect upon the factors that define our everyday lives. She speaks sensibly and with clarity of what determines women’s experiences—education, marriage, maternity, taboos associated with the body, and gender violence—but also of anxiety, fear, rebelliousness, the longing for freedom, and the obsessions that propel the process of writing.
With a forceful, poetic prose, permeated by humor and irony, the author addresses the different time periods she has witnessed, allowing us to catch glimpses of the many women she’s been. Her path of acknowledgement is forever unfinished since, same as her, “we are all incomprehensible. We are rectifiable, as when we want words to answer for us. There is no tale capable of expressing who we are.”

“In La mujer incierta, Piedad Bonnett arrives like an explosive bomb. She breaks taboos. She removes masks. She digs into wounds. She stirs up memories. She touches on untouchable themes. She questions ancestral modesty. She tears apart garments. All in an exercise of introspection and an attempt to review and organize what were previously loose particles of her life.”
