El futuro es un lugar extraño
Cynthia Rimsky

FICTION | 2026 | 188 pages

La Caldini is accused by her husband of abandoning their shared home. During the trial, she becomes involved with a lawyer and a former political prisoner who take her back to her youth, to the El Salto neighborhood and to a struggle against the dictatorship that seems very distant to her, as if the young woman of that time were not her.

Filled with black humor and carnivalesque characters and episodes, El futuro es un lugar extraño offers a hilarious return to a Chile of the 1980s that does not reek of a souvenir. A delicate narrative staging allows the author to recount the broken and ghostly experience of a woman frozen between her political dreams of youth and the suffocating present.

A settling of scores with the political generation of surrender, of monitored democracy, of conversion and individual accommodation. An uncomfortable novel, one might say, of refined ferocity and corrosive subtlety.
