A phantom limb is an amputation that persists as pain and as a presence. Is it an imaginary pain? No; it’s real. The characters in these stories carry their losses with them. Pain that becomes ingrained, throbbing silently in the most intimate sphere—pain that remains lodged in the memory of families, lovers, and friends; that is inscribed in the history of a wounded nation. In this universe, addictions, escapes, and emotional detachment serve as anesthesia for what cannot be endured or erased: because some ghosts are invisible, but still they wander within us.
