J.P. Cuenca

João Paulo Cuenca is an Argentine-Brazilian writer and filmmaker born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is the author of Corpo presente [Body Present] (2003), O dia Mastroianni [The Mastroianni Day] (2007), O único final feliz para a história de amor é um acidente [The Only Happy Ending for a Love Story is An Accident] (2010), A última madrugada [The Last Dawn] (2012), and Descobri que estava morto [I Found Out I Was Dead] (2016). His novels have been translated into eight languages. 

I Found Out I Was Dead won the Machado de Assis Prize for Best Novel of the Year awarded by Brazil's National Library, and it was a finalist for the Jabuti Award. The translation of The Only Happy Ending... was nominated for the 2015 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in the Portuguese category. In 2007, he was selected by the Hay Festival and the organizers of Bogota: World Book Capital as one of the 39 Best Latin American Writers Under the Age of 39. He was also selected for the first issue of Granta’s "Best of Young Brazilian Novelists" in 2012. 

The Death of J.P. Cuenca (2016), the film adaptation of I Found Out I was Dead, is his first feature film as a writer/director and was a part of the first Venice Film Festival College Production Lab. It premiered in Brazil at the Rio and São Paulo International Film Festivals and in Europe as part of the main competition selection for the prestigious CPH:DOX in Denmark. The film was also selected for international film festivals such as Punto de Vista (Spain, 2016), BAFICI (Argentina, 2016), The Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinema (Canada, 2016), New Horizon IFF (Poland, 2016), and Lakino (Germany, 2016).
