NOVEL | 2009 | 388 pages
One morning, Carlos Fuguet disappeared. The problem child, the black sheep that every family seems (or needs) to have, he packed up his bags and vanished from the face of the earth. An immigrant lost in the immensity of North America that became a ghost, a lunch-counter rumor, the subject of speculations with no answer.
Thirty years later later his nephew, internationally-acclaimed Chilean writer Alberto Fuguet, embarks on an obsessive quest to find him. He starts to put the pieces together, assembling the puzzle, giving rise to a physical and moral journey, a kind of internal and external road movie that will lead him from the heart of Santiago de Chile to the American Southwest. Alberto mixes, adds, subtracts, toys with fiction and reality and in the process he succeeds at transforming a family history into a book of learning and maturing: his riskiest and most personal novel yet.
