From one of the most accomplished Portuguese authors, a story that spans across centuries and continents, between Lisbon and Japan, with a family mystery at its center.
A story of love, loss, and overcoming that is also a homage to life’s imperfect beauty.
Japan, 1917. Young Katsuro is exiled from his family to an inhospitable island by his own father, a powerful governor, for dishonoring his family’s name. Abandoned, the boy will come across the terrible secret of the Tsukuda family while he struggles to survive hunger, thirst, and guilt.
Lisbon, one hundred years later. In the Camões School, one of the oldest in the city, a Geography teacher commits suicide in a classroom. Our narrator, a high school employee and recovering alcoholic, decides to begin weekly meetings to help his colleagues overcome the shock.
One winter night, a mysterious stranger appeares at the meeting. He is Japanese, and his name is Tsukuda. His strange behavior sparks an unhealthy fascination in the narrator. Both are persecuted by the past, both desire the impossible.
Somewhere between dream and the purest reality, Ensina-me a voar sobre os telhados is a story in which a father and a son learn to love each other, it is a space in which one seeks to embrace old woes and human fragility. A novel that is a homage to life’s imperfect beauty.
